*Some insider info about this chapter: Phinn's father died the previous year (since then they've been living with their uncle) but his way of coping with his death is writing him letters as if he were still alive. He's worried if when he truly accepts his father's death he'll lose hope, because their uncle is abusive and he and his little brother have nowhere else to go.
